If you own a smartphone, you have probably received text messages from someone who acts like they know you. The message may be about an urgent meeting or appointment, or just a friendly get together. Out of politeness, you may text back “Sorry, wrong number” – which is what scammers are counting on.
Once they receive a response, scammers will try to strike up innocent conversation to establish a friendship. This may go on for weeks or even months before the scammer uses this bond to lure you into their schemes, such as cryptocurrency investment scams.
How to Protect Yourself
- Ignore text messages from people you don’t know. By responding you’re letting the scammer know your phone number is active and you could receive even more texts.
- Block suspicious numbers to stop them from contacting you again.
- Don’t click on links. The text message may direct you to a malicious link that uploads malware to your device.
- Don’t disclose your personal information or banking credentials.
