Scammers are targeting drivers, especially those that travel on highways and toll roads to get where they need to go. It starts with a text message from a “tolling agency” about paying your balance with a link to pay “overdue toll charges” to avoid late fees.
Don’t click the link! This is a common phishing scam which uses a malicious link to steal your personal information, your driver’s license or even your identity. If you pay the bogus charge, you’re not only giving away your money but your credit card number as well.
Avoid the scam:
- Slow down. Scammers are experts at creating a false sense of urgency to get you to react quickly.
- Contact the tolling agency. Check to see if the text it legitimate by directly contacting the agency. Do not use any information in the text!
- Do not respond. Mark the text as spam on your phone and delete the message.
