There’s a new Amazon scam to watch out for! The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says scammers are calling and/or sending text messages about a suspicious charge to your account.
Scammers will “spoof” their phone number to make it appear as though Amazon is contacting you. They will give you an elaborate story about a problem with your account or that your identity has been stolen to open fraudulent accounts.
Here’s some red flags to help spot the scam:
- Amazon won’t call you to verify purchases. To review your recent purchases, log into your Amazon account and check out the “Your Orders” page.
- No one legitimate will tell you to keep a secret, especially, if they claim to be from the government or that a crime was involved.
- Your Social Security number wasn’t used. Scammers will tell you this to scare you and get you to act without thinking.
- You won’t be arrested for account fraud. Do not transfer your money to protect it. If someone did steal your identity, complete an FTC identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov.
