Important: Increased Card Fraud in New England Stores – Please Use Your PIN (Debit)

We have recently learned of an increase in fraudulent card purchases in New England states at certain merchant types. In order to reduce the risk of fraud for our customers, we have placed some additional temporary restrictions on our debit cards.

As Debit (PIN) transactions offer an added layer of security, these blocks typically will not apply if a valid PIN is entered. To avoid any inconvenience, we recommend always asking the merchant to process the transaction as Debit (PIN), instead of Credit (Signature).

Current Card Restrictions

  • Contactless/ Virtual Wallet Payments (ie. Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, etc.) – Blocked
  • Mobile Processing Systems (ie. Square, Spark Pay, Moolah, etc.) – Some high dollar transactions blocked
  • Transactions Made Within New England – Some signature (credit) transactions at the following merchants may be declined. A restriction has been placed on signature (credit) transactions made at the following high-risk merchant types:
    • Grocery Stores
    • Discount Stores
    • Department Stores
    • Hardware Stores
    • Toy Stores
    • Electronic Stores
    • Drug Stores & Pharmacies
    • Stationary Stores
    • Video/Gaming Stores
    • Voice Response Processing Machines
    • Clothing and Accessory Stores
    • Sports Stores
    • Cosmetic Stores

    For your security and to minimize any inconvenience, please ask the merchant to process the transaction as “Debit” and enter your PIN.

  • Transactions Made Within the US, but Outside of New England – Signature (credit) transactions at most businesses outside of New England will be declined. Customers will be required to enter their PIN numbers to make most purchases in these states.
  • Transaction Made Outside the United States - All debit card transactions are blocked outside of the United States, unless we are notified in advance by the customer. Please call, stop by, or complete the notification of travel plans form in online banking to inform us of your travel plans.
